The presence of the diseases yaws and bejel are indicated by periosteal reaction patterns. The distributions of these two diseases in ancient North American human populations show evidence of climatic influence. Those ancient populations lacking either yaws or bejel (the null periosteal reaction pattern) can be found in the coldest parts of the Cold Winter Regions. Those populations with yaws (the poly-ostotic periosteal reaction) can be found in the milder portions of the Cold Winter Regions. The populations with bejel (the pauci-ostotic periosteal reaction) are found either outside of or marginal to Cold Winter Regions. The Bering Strait area is considered to be the gateway to the ancient New World. The cold climates present in this area should have influenced the routes available for the diseases to spread from population to population or by migration of infected populations into the Western Hemisphere. It is suggested that the coastal route with its milder maritime climate was the route taken by yaws when it entered the New World. The presence of bejel in ancient North America presents a conundrum. The climate would have blocked the spread of the disease from Siberia to Alaska in either Late Glacial or Holocene times. This suggests that our present view of migration routes is incomplete. 相似文献

Elasmobranch fossils recovered from Campanian marine exposures at Elizabethtown, Bladen County, NC, include species from at least seven genera of sharks and four genera of batoids. Of particular interest is the recovery of multiple isolated rostral spines from a new sclerorhynchid sawfish, Borodinopristis shannoni, sp. nov. Species of Borodinopristis are known from oral teeth and/or rostral spines (‘rostral teeth’ for some authors). In species known from the latter, the spines differ from those of other sclerorhynchids by the presence of one or more ‘collared’ barbs on the posterior margin of the crown. Unlike the previously described B. schwimmeri, the rostral spines of the new species have well-developed hooked barbs with collars (curved, connected crests) extending asymmetrically onto the dorsal and ventral surfaces of the spine, as well as small, rudimentary barbs. Also unlike B. schwimmeri, the anterior margin of the spine is strongly convex and there is no enamelled collar at the base of the crown. We have reviewed past and recent research on the radiation of the North American genus Boechera (Brassicaceae), and discuss future prospects for our understanding of the evolutionary processes and patterns of differentiation in this highly polymorphic genus. Boechera comprises about 80 biennial to perennial species of exclusively North American and Greenlandic distribution. Hybridization and apomixis, in conjunction with polyploidy, were found to play a major role in the origin and maintenance of intraspecific and interspecific polymorphism. However, taxonomic classification within the genus has mainly been based on morphological characters, and diagnostic features discriminating between taxa are often limited. Molecular markers are promising tools for: the assessment of infrageneric phylogen‐etic relationships, the isolation of basal sexual taxa, the detection of hybridization and estimation of its frequency among lineages in time and space, the identification of centres of genetic and species diversity, and the comparison of various reproductive modes. We present and discuss the major achievements obtained since the introduction of molecular methods to Boechera research with respect to these aims, and point out possible shortcomings of specific marker systems. The distribution and transmission of apomixis, polyphyletic origin of genotypes and cytotypes, variation in reproductive system, and the lack of consensus between current taxonomic concepts and evolutionary evidence are the major topics discussed here in the context of hybridization. 相似文献

Trichogenes longipinnis Britski & Ortega is a narrowly distributed endemic and phenotypically variable catfish from the coastal basins of the Serra do Mar range in southeast Brazil. We examined patterns of mtDNA variation of this species in coastal basins of the Serra do Mar to determine the influences of past climatic and geomorphological processes in connection with the currently isolated basins. Allozyme data were also used to test the hypothesis that the different spotting patterns in the different areas could be the result of cryptic speciation. Regardless of body pigmentation, T. longipinnis specimens from across the basins were found to belong to a single species, but the populations were structured in accordance with the current hydrological watersheds, in four management units across the three distinct basins of its geographic distribution. Thus, the current genetic distribution may be best explained by both marine regressions and orogeny. Based on the low levels of genetic variation and high population structure observed, we suggest that T. longipinnis should be classified as “vulnerable” in the Brazilian red list of threatened fauna. Furthermore, we propose that the headwaters of the Parati-Mirim River basin should be incorporated as an extension of the Bocaina National Park to protect its genetically differentiated lineages. 相似文献

The Thomas sea catfish is characterized by a highly variable parietosupraoccipital process, which has been recognized as intraspecific variation or phenotypic plasticity. On the basis of this variation, three nominal species have been described, with two of them currently considered to be junior synonyms. Here, the Notarius grandicassis species complex is reviewed, considering the geographic variation of its morphological traits. Notarius grandicassis from north-eastern South America, and Notarius parmocassis, from eastern and southern Brazil, are redescribed as distinct evolutionary units, even though they are not differentiated by partial sequences of the mitochondrial genes CytB and ATPase 8/6. This condition is interpreted as a consequence of the recent evolutionary history of these species, which are found in distinct geographic areas with different environmental conditions. 相似文献

Patella vulgata is a boreal cold temperate species and is the dominant limpet in northern Europe. Few works have focussed on the population
genetics of this species. Therefore, the aim of this work was to assess the degree of genetic and morphological differentiation
of P. vulgata on a macroscale by using 20 allozyme loci and 6 morphological variables. Samples were taken from the following locations:
Dingle Peninsula (Southwest Ireland), Port Erin (Southwest Isle of Man), St. Bees Head (north Cumbria, England), St. Agnes
Head (north Cornwall, England), Cellar Beach (south Devon, England), Whitley Bay (north Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England), Sines
(Portugal), and Pointe de Chanchardon, La Rochelle (Bay of Biscay, France). Morphological variables were analysed by the multivariate
Canonical discriminant analysis. Genetic variation was assessed by diversity measures such as polymorphism and heterozygosity;
genetic subdivision of P. vulgata population was determined by the estimator θ of F
ST, and the genetic similarity between populations was measured by Nei’s genetic identity. No significant morphological differentiation
was observed among samples. Moderate genetic population subdivision was observed (θ = 0.137±0.074) despite great geographic
distances. The minimum genetic identity observed was between Ireland and France (I = 0.942) and maximum was observed between Portugal and north-east England (I=0.998). Two main groups were shown by UPGMA cluster analysis (I = 0.965). One formed by Irish, Manx, north Cumbria, and curiously, south Devon samples, while the second includes Portuguese,
French, north-Newcastle-upon-thyne, and north Cornwall samples. No association (g = 0.956; p>0.050) was found between pair-wise genetic divergence and geographic distance separating subpopulations, mainly due to an

Aim To document geographical interspecific patterns of body size of European and North American squamate reptile assemblages and explore the relationship between body size patterns and environmental gradients.

Methods We processed distribution maps for native species of squamate reptiles to document interspecific spatial variation of body size at a grain size of 110 × 110 km. We also examined seven environmental variables linked to four hypotheses possibly influencing body size gradients. We used simple and multiple regression, evaluated using information theory, to identify the set of models best supported by the data.
Results Europe is characterized by clear latitudinal trends in body size, whereas geographical variation in body size in North America is complex. There is a consistent association of mean body size with measures of ambient energy in both regions, although lizards increase in size northwards whereas snakes show the opposite pattern. Our best models accounted for almost 60% of the variation in body size of lizards and snakes within Europe, but the proportions of variance explained in North America were less than 20%.
Main conclusions Although body size influences the energy balance of thermoregulating ectotherms, inconsistent biogeographical patterns and contrasting associations with energy in lizards and snakes suggest that no single mechanism can explain variation of reptile body size in the northern temperate zone. 相似文献

Within generally calcareous sediment sequences, layers of variable thickness of the giant diatom Ethmodiscus were found in five cores recovered in the Subtropical South Atlantic between 23° and 33°S from both sides of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Two types of oozes occur: (almost) monospecific layers of Ethmodiscus and layers dominated by Ethmodiscus, with several accompanying tropical/subtropical, oligotrophic-water diatoms. The two thickest Ethmodiscus layers occur in GeoB3801-6 around 29°S, and accumulated during late MIS 14 and MIS 12, respectively. Downcore concentrations of Ethmodiscus valves range between 3.4 ? 104 and 2.3 ? 107 valves g− 1. We discuss the ooze formation in the context of migration of frontal systems and changes in the thermohaline circulation. The occurrence of Ethmodiscus oozes in sediments underlying the present-day pelagic, low-nutrient waters is associated with a terminal event of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition at around 530 ka, when the ocean circulation rearranged after a period of reduced NADW production. 相似文献

This study is based on Cenomanian to lower Turonian sediments of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 1258, 1259, 1260, and 1261 from the Demerara Rise (Leg 207, western tropical Atlantic, off Suriname) that are oriented along a paleodepth transect. Studied sediments include the Cenomanian/Turonian Boundary Event (CTBE) or Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE 2) and consist of laminated black shales with TOC values between 5% and 10% below and above OAE 2 and up to 29% within the OAE 2 interval. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages in this eutrophic environment are generally characterized by low diversities and strong fluctuations of abundances, indicating oxygen depletion and high organic matter fluxes. Dominant taxa at all sites are Bolivina anambra, Gavelinella dakotensis, Tappanina sp., Praebulimina prolixa, and Neobulimina albertensis. Based on the positive stable carbon isotope excursion characteristics of OAE 2 we subdivided the studied successions into three intervals: (1) the interval below OAE 2; (2) the carbon isotope excursion reflecting OAE 2; and (3) the interval above OAE 2. In the bathymetrically shallower Sites 1260 and 1261 benthic foraminiferal assemblages indicate anoxic to sometimes slightly dysoxic bottom-water conditions below the OAE 2 interval. The bathymetrically deepest Site 1258, in contrast, reflects more oxygenated bottom waters with an almost continuous occurrence of benthic foraminifera. It is therefore suggested that the shallower sites were located within the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), whereas Site 1258 was below the OMZ. During OAE 2 anoxic conditions prevailed at the shallower sites. At Site 1258 benthic foraminifera indicate severe dysoxic but not anoxic conditions. This pattern is proposed to reflect a strengthening of the OMZ possibly related to increased primary production during OAE 2. A short-term repopulation event of benthic foraminifera in the lower third of the OAE 2 interval was observed at all sites, reflecting a brief bottom-water oxygenation event. This short-lived event parallels a surface-water cooling and is probably equivalent to the “Plenus Cool Event” in Europe and the “benthonic zone” in the U.S. Western Interior. The benthic foraminifera of a ~0.5 Ma interval following OAE 2 still indicate oxygen depletion of bottom waters. Subsequently, however, a strong increase in benthic foraminiferal abundance and diversity reflects better oxygenation of the bottom-water masses, probably related to a weakening of the OMZ due to decreasing organic matter flux. 相似文献

Species richness, absolute and relative abundances of Maastrichtian calcareous nannofossils were analyzed in Hole 1258A. Absolute abundances of taxa were used for the biozonation of this hole and the record of successive bio-events. Distribution patterns of cool water taxa such as Ahmuellerella octoradiata, Gartnerago segmentatum and Kamptnerius magnificus underscore two major cooling events. These events occurred during Chron C31r and during undifferentiated Chrons C31n to C30n. The latter event appears to be accompanied by lowered productivity, as expressed by the lower abundances of fertility index taxa Biscutum constans and Zeugrhabdotus spp. An end-Maastrichtian warming event is recorded in Chron C29r by the sudden drop in abundance of cool water taxa and acme of tropical taxon Micula murus. The disappearance of B. constans just before this event and the significant increase of Micula decussata, respectively, suggest lowered productivity and high-stress environmental conditions prior to the K/P boundary (Cretaceous-Paleogene). These results correlate very well with the climatic scenario proposed by Li and Keller (1998a) in South Atlantic Hole 525A as suggested by stable isotopes and distribution patterns of planktic foraminifera. 相似文献
